Ancient Ostia was the first roman colony, a commercial centre and the harbor city of Rome, founded in the VII century BC by Ancus Marcius. the fourth king of Rome. The name Ostia derives from latin and means "mouth" because it was founded at the mouth of the Tiber river.  During the imperial age arrived to 75.000 inhabitants and it was provided with all the services a town of the time could require. The archeological area was excavated in the early XX century and it is famous for the excellent preservation of ancient buildings, frescoes and extraordinary mosaics. Here you can find the earliest Synagogue of Europe, eighteen mithraea, public latrinas, many public baths, numerous taverns and inns, a large theatre and a firefighting service.
